Our Story

PURPLE is a 10-minute short film originally conceived by Bruno Canel, Bea Nogueira, and Rafael Lins in 2009, on the historic Lamaräo Farm, located in Alagoas, northeastern Brazil.

Drawing inspiration from the eerie silent films of the 1920s and the voyeuristic intimacy of Sofia Coppola’s female leads, PURPLE embraces a deliberately slower pace, fostering a deeper emotional resonance with its audience.

From its inception, PURPLE was envisioned as a dialogue-free short film. The absence of spoken words, heightened by the presence of natural sounds and the emotional performances of the actors, creates an emotional narrative, unrestricted by language barriers.

Despite being Canel’s favourite screenplay he had worked on while in Brazil, PURPLE didn’t go into production until after Canel relocated to Vancouver, Canada. Thanks to funding from the Canada Council for the Arts and sponsorships from Keslow Camera and MBS Equipment, Canel’s creative vision for PURPLE came to fruition throughout 2022 and 2023. The project's North American premiere is planned for 2025.
